Ice climbers survived crash almost unscathed

A broken fuse hook is a Swiss ice climbers on Thursday turned
in
Martell’s undoing.

The 40-year-old was in setting clock to 14 below the Martell hut
while the
safety hook in the wall of ice, when the hook suddenly gave way and
broke.



The man then fell from about ten feet above the ice. He then slid a further
40 meters away on a snow field.

The Swiss had a blessing in disguise: in spite of the devastating crash, he
moved only to an ankle fracture.

For the crew of the Pelican 1, the rescue was difficult because of the high
snow. The 40-year-old was flown to the hospital for further investigation of
Merino.
